Mission Statement

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to excellence in health care for women, providing education of physicians, and women's health research.

Welcome to the Kern Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, which is affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).  This is one of the oldest Obstetrics and Gynecology residency programs in the United States, now entering its 61st year.  We are proud of training over five decades of outstanding obstetricians and gynecologists.  KMC is recognized as a Center of Excellence for obstetrical and gynecological care to the women of the Southern San Joaquin Valley.

The residency trains obstetrician-gynecologists that are well rounded and successfully recruited to practice in private, community, and academic settings after graduation.  The residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology is a four-year, fully accredited program, which accepts three residents per year through the National Residents Matching Program (NRMP).  For more information regarding the application process and national residency match, please visit the Applicants page.

The KMC Obstetrics & Gynecology service is a referral center for the Southern San Joaquin Valley for women with high risk obstetric and gynecologic conditions.  These women are cared for at Kern Medical Center through specialty obstetric and gynecology clinics as well as the inpatient services.  Approximately 70% of KMC deliveries are high risk.  There is 24-hour in-house obstetric and gynecology faculty and anesthesiologists.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 28-bed unit.  It is the largest in the county and is able to provide extensive services with some of the most experienced staff.  There is state-of-the art equipment available on labor and delivery, clinic, operating rooms, and emergency room.  The department has ultrasound equipment available to the residents in labor and delivery, clinic and the emergency room.  Maternal fetal medicine support is from UCLA.  The obstetrics and gynecology clinic provides maternal fetal medicine consultation and ultrasound services, and is a state licensed Prenatal Diagnostic Center with genetic counseling services.

The KMC gynecology service performs a wide variety of complex gynecological procedures and surgeries, especially advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries in addition to more traditional abdominal and vaginal gynecological surgeries.  KMC is also a referral center for gynecologic oncology patients from the Southern San Joaquin Valley.  KMC obstetrics and gynecology residents directly care for gynecologic oncology patients in the clinic, hospital, and operating room with the staff gynecologic oncologist.

There is block time available on a daily basis in the operating room for the gynecology department.  The Kern Medical Center obstetrics and gynecology residents participate in the full range of women's health services including ultrasound, cystometrics, cystoscopy, colposcopy, tissue biopsies, loop excision procedures, intrauterine device insertion and removal, and contraceptive implant insertion and removal. Hysteroscopies and cystoscopies are also performed at the outpatient Diagnostic Treatment Center at KMC.

Kern Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program embraces its mission to train the next generation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and serve the women of the Southern San Joaquin Valley!
