Juan M. Lopez, M.D., FACOG- Department Chair

Dr. Lopez is Board Certified in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He first came to Kern Medical Center (KMC) as a third year medical student in 1998.  After obtaining a medical degree with high honors from Ross University in 2000, Dr. Lopez continued his residency here at KMC and graduated in 2004. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Lopez joined KMC’s OB/GYN faculty.  He then took on a much bigger responsibility as the Interim Chairman of the OB/GYN Department from January 2013 through June 2013.  In July of the same year, Dr. Lopez was selected as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.


Raised in a community demographically similar to Kern County, Dr. Lopez has a unique perspective on caring for the people seeking care at Kern Medical Center.  From his 15 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology in our community, he understands the importance of accessible high quality patient care.  In his 9 years of academic medicine, he has been involved extensively in teaching medical students and residents and has been recognized as an accomplished educator.  His goal at Kern Medical Center is to develop a community based Residency Program that provides the highest quality patient care in an academically oriented environment.  His areas of interest include vaginal surgery with emphasis on vaginal hysterectomy, high risk obstetrics, and hysteroscopy.

Antonio L. Garcia, M.D., FACOG- Residency Program Director

Dr. Garcia received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Loyola Marymount University and his Medical Doctorate Degree from the University of California, San Diego. He went on to complete his OB/GYN Internship and Residency Program at Kern Medical Center.

Dr. Garcia joined the Kern Medical Center faculty in the OB/GYN Department in 1988. He is the current Program Director of the OB/GYN Residency Program.

Dr. Lujan is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) with a B.S in Biology.  After undergraduate studies, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 1979.  He continued on to residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California (LAC-USC) Women's Hospital, and graduated in 1983.  Currently, Dr. Lujan holds a faculty appointments as Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Southern California, as well as Adjunct Clinical Professor at Touro University.  In addition, Dr. Lujan is the Clerkship Director at Kern Medical Center, KMC Site Director for the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine core clerkship in Ob/Gyn, and the Medical Director of Core Clerkships at KMC for Ross University School of Medicine.

Sally W. Nalesnik, M.D, FACOG- Associate Faculty of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Residency:  Obstetrics & Gynecology, Wilford Hall Medical Center

Sally Wonderly Nalesnik, MD, FACOG, a Bakersfield native, is a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist.  Dr. Nalesnik graduated with honors from UCLA.  After obtaining a competative slot in the US Air Force, she went on to earn her medical degree at USUHS in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating with honors and inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honors Society in 1996.  Dr. Nalesnik then trained at Wilford Hall Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, in San Antonio, Texas with the specialty of Ob/Gyn.  She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2003.  Dr. Nalesnik has travelled the world with her job and love of medicine.  She proudly served the women in the Armed Forces five years in Landstuhl, Germany, the primary overseas hospital supporting operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Endouring Freedom.

Dr. Nalesnik has received numerous awards for her outstanding teaching and contributions to Women’s health.  She is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a published author in her field.  She lives with her physician husband and three fun-loving boys and two dogs.  After selection as a Lieutenant Colonel with the U.S. Air Force, she has chosen to return to her roots.  Dr. Nalesnik enjoys teaching and academics.
